ECO TOURISM PLACES

HLAWGAR WILDLIFE PARK

Location

Located between 17'01' N and 96'05' E in Taukkyan Model Village, Mingaladon Township of Yangon Division.

Area

540 acres, comprising a wildlife park (818 acres), a mini-zoo (62 acres) and a buffer zone (660 acres).

Year of Establishment

Established on 30 September 1982.

Access
  • Approximately 22 miles north of Yangon, just west of Yangon-Pyay Road.
  • Golden Thamin (Cervus eldi), endemic to Myanmar.
Objectives
  • To establish an enviromental education centre near Yangon.
  • To protect the forests and vegetative cover in the catchment of Hlawga Lake.
  • To establish a representative collection of Myanmar indigenous wildlife species of mammals, reptiles and birds, which will be kept under as near as possible natural conditions in such as a way that they can be readily viewed by visitors.

Wildlife

Thamin, hog deer, barking deer, sambar deer, rhesus monkey, pythons, pangolin, mythun, all have in the fenced wildlife park.In the mini-zoo, small mammals, birds, tigers, leopards, bears and estuarine crocodiles are being displayed more freely in large in spacious cages, aviaries and moated enclosures, built with modern zoo comcept.

  • Effective protection and management of degraded forests.
  • Establishment and management of buffer zone plantations.
  • Construction of high quality rest house ''chalets'' which are in hamony with the natural surroundings.
  • Establishment of a new Information Centre.
  • Construction of a 5-storied viewing tower.
  • Maintenance of roads, nature tails and of all buildings and their utilities.
  • Research programmes on vegatative study and ornithological studies on both resident and mgratory birds.
  • Enviroment education activities to create public awareness of enviroment conservation.
    Joint-ventrue development works between Forest Department and loyal private sectors for all-round development of Hlawga park.
  • Development of one 18-hole golf course of international standard in the buffer zone of the park.

  • Study nature conservation activities in Myanmar.
  • Observing ecological study on Thamin, hog deer, barking deer, sambar deer, etc., in their natural state.
  • Enjoyment of out-door recreation such as picnic sites, traditional huts, boats and elephant rides.
  • Conducting individual or group bird-watching activities with assistance from experienced bird-watchers of the park.
  • Study a previously human-disturbed and degraded forest, gradually restoring itself into a well grown natural forest, over a time-span of 20 years.
  • Recreation in high quality "chalets" built by the Forest Department.

MYAING HAY WUN ELEPHANT CAMP

Location

Located in Taikkyi Township of Yangon Division.

Area

10 acres.

Year of Establishment

Established in 1986.

Access

Yangon to Pa-lon, 60 miles by car, Pa-lon to Kwan Ti Myaung, unmetalled road 8 miles, and Kwan Ti Myaung to Myaing Hay Wun, forest road 4.5 miles.

Objectives

To develop and promote from Elephant Nursing Camp to Myaing Hay Wun Elephant Research Camp.

Wildlife

Elephant, Gaur, Banteng, Barking deer. Wild boar, Hear Wild cat, Green Peafowl, Ruddy sheld duck, Hill myna, Blossom-headed parajeet, pheasant, Red jungle fowl, Quail, Dove, Duck, lesser tree duck, Butterflies, Moths, Snaker, Monitar lizard, Groung lizard, Grass lizard and Chameleon are present.

Conservation, Development and Research Programmes
  • Research on Elephant Artificial Inseminaion (EAI)
  • Increasing elephant population by Elephant Artificial Insemination (EAI) method.
  • Study reporduction of female elephant by feeding food additives.
Opportunities for Study and Recreation
  • Study of fishes and aquatic creatures in La-har-ma-nge fishpond and recreation by fishing.
  • Viewing of pyinkadoe plantation situated near Sinte and listening to the sound of birds.
  • Hiking and mountaineering in the forest.
  • Observing training of domestic elephants.
  • Elephants riding around the camp
  • Study of the capture of wild elephants.

MOEYINGYI (WET LAND) SANCTUARY

Location

Located between 17'34' N and 96'35' E in Bago and Waw Townships of Bago Division.

Area

40 square miles.

Access
  • 70 miles from Yangon along the Yangon-Bago-Pyinpongyi Highway.
Objectives
  • To conserve resident and migratory water birds and their habitats.
  • To conduct scientific research on resident and migratory water birds in cooperation with international scientific organizations.
  • To organize extension programmes to educate the public on the importance of wetland ecosystem and public participation in wetland conservation activities.
Forest / Vegetative Types
  • More then twenty species of aquatic grass and herb (Emergent macrophytes) including kaing grass and water are present in the sanctuary and Notsaba(Oxyza officinalis) grow particularly in shallow aera of the sanctuary. Especially Kaing grasslands are the most suitable breeding ground for water birds.

  • According to the census conducted in January, 1998 it is noted that a total number of (4529) birds inhabited the Moeyingyi wetland wildlife sanctuary.

  • Conservation of water birds and their habitats.
  • Conducting research on resident and migratory water birds in cooperation with international scientific organizations and conversation and management training courses.
  • Implementation of wetland conservation and management programmes.
  • Construction of basic infrastructure such as an information center, a rest house, a restaurant and two bird observation towers needed for the promotion of ecotourism and in joint-venture with a privately owned company, Shweyiwin Co.,Ltd, to promote ecotourism.

  • Watching resident and migratory water birds and enjoyment of natural view near Yangon.
  • Conducting research activities on wetland ecosystem.
  • Study wetland environment by boat.
Accommodation facilities
  • Accommodation for 5 to 10 persons at a guest house.
